Subject: Re: stuck map drawers (fwd)

Jim,

Do these units have locking mechanisms? One of our drawer units, a Stacor, has such a device, and it causes the drawers to simply not open. I think it might be caused when the locking rod (which connects to all the drawers) settles into a locked position if the drawers are not opened frequently. The upper drawers become un-stuck by opening the bottom drawer, which is the closest to the actual locking mechanism. This seems to 'reset' the mechanism, and keeps it useable. In a pathetic but extremely practical attempt to not have to do mass shifting, we have placed little signs on each of the problem drawers, instructing users to open the bottom drawer first, then to open the desired drawer. Fortunately, maps of lesser importance to central Washington inhabit these drawers (apologies to Svalbard/Spitsbergen and points north...). I should probably put on my coveralls and tear the unit down and rip out the offending mechanism, as we have no need for it.
Another problem shows its head when drawers and units have been overloaded, (or abused during a moving process!) so that the surrounding supporting structure now weighs on the drawers in selected locations, causing the drawers to stick or scrape. I've noticed in all units that roller wheels must be tightened up regularly, and occasionally greased. Metal filings turn everything a pewter color, but that's normal!

With your recent move, at least you have a traceable reason for drawer malfunctions. They could be 'out of plumb' or 'out of square'. If you and staff can't realign and 'tune up' the units, it seems it's time to call the 'professional' back! Best of luck.

Subject: stuck map drawers

Mapsters,

Our map collection was moved a few weeks ago by a professional library
moving company, and each Hamilton unit and drawer were put back in the
same configuration they were in before. Yet we have discovered that 11 map
drawers are stuck closed, another won't close, and many more are hard to
open or close. I'm baffled. Have any of you who have experienced moved
had this same predicament? My first thought is to remove the drawers
above and below a stuck drawer so we could hopefully see what the problem
is. Would that be something the movers are responsible for or should my
staff and I try to work on it?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Jim
