UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY National Exposure
Research Laboratory Environmental Sciences Division Las Vegas,
Nevada
 
 
TECHNICIAN/JUNIOR SCIENTIST POSITIONS VAILABLE
 
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Exposure Research
Laboratory in Las Vegas, Nevada is seeking qualified applicants
for entry-level (technician/junior scientist) positions. A total
of three positions will be filled; two located at the Environmental
Sciences Division (ESD) in Las Vegas, NV and one will be located
at Research Triangle Park, North Carolina with the Landscape
Characterization Branch, ESD.
 
These are full-time, permanent positions. U.S. citizenship is
required and candidates must meet U.S. Office of Personnel Management
qualification requirements including specific educational course
work.  Salary ranges are commensurate with qualifications. Entry
level positions range from $21,797 to $33,026 (GS-5/7/9). Relocation
expenses will not be covered.  Selected candidates will be eligible
for a full benefits package, including health insurance, life
insurance, retirement, and vacation and sick leave.
 
ABBREVIATED POSITION DESCRIPTIONS:
 
ESD/ Tech 1: Computer Scientist, Statistician, Mathematician:  The
incumbent will provide computer support to principal investigators
in a variety of research and development activities including
computer programming, software maintenance, beta testing, analyzing
and graphing data, and entering and validating data. Research
emphasis will be in the areas of spatial statistics and sampling
design. The research will be applied principally to chemical
pollutant and ecological issues. Examples of the duties include:
develop algorithms and computer programs as needed; apply and
compare statistical methods, and optimize code; run simulations,
for example, for outlier detection, geostatistics, and spatial
representations; conduct literature searches, enter data, and run
routine programs as needed. The candidate should have training or
experience in scientific or technical fields, preferably with an
emphasis in mathematics, statistics, computer science or geography.
This position is located in Las Vegas, NV.
 
ESD /Tech 2: Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician:
Incumbent will provide technical assistance to scientists working
in the scientific research areas of comparative risk assessment,
non-point source nutrient source allocations, nitrogen deposition,
and land-cover change detection. Examples of duties include:
development of primary data sets, database management, and meta
data documentation compliance.  Candidate must have thorough
knowledge of GIS topology, rule-based decision theory, spatial data
analysis techniques and methodologies with application background
in the area of ecological applications. Must also be familiar with
the UNIX operating system and PC Windows 95/NT and network systems.
Knowledge of cartography and federal geospatial data standards is
required. This position is located in Research Triangle Park, North
Carolina; Landscape Characterization Branch.
 
 
ESD/Tech 3: Remote Sensing Technician. The incumbent will provide
echnical assistance to scientists/engineers working in the landscape
ecology field. The incumbent will provide support to principal
investigators in a variety of research activities, including remote
sensing data acquisition, processing, and analysis. Examples of
duties include:  co-registering, labeling and accuracy assessing
remote sensing images, scanning images, and creating compact disk
products. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of the remote
sensing field with special interest in environmental work. The
incumbent should also be familiar with one of he following software
packages: Imagine, ENVI, or PCI.  Knowledge of ARC/VIEW and ARC/INFO
is desired. Incumbent must be familiar with PC Windows 95/NT and
network systems. Knowledge of Global Positioning systems (GPS) and
a desire to assist in field studies is highly desirable. This
position is located in Las Vegas, Nevada.
