POSITION TITLE:        Librarian (CS-1410-9/11)


SALARY:   CS-9   $40,603.00 - $52,285.00 ; CS-11 $48,920.00 - $63,077.00 per
annum

                              Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial  Library
                              901 G Street, N.W.
                              Washington, D.C. 20001

HOURS:                  As scheduled within weekday hours
                              8:45 A.M. - 9:00 P.M, and on Saturdays as
assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:     CS-9: A Masters degree in Library Science is required.
In addition, education and/or experience that have provided professional
knowledge in the areas of history, travel and/or geography and biography are
desirable.  CS-11:  A minimum of one year's experience at the CS-1410-9
grade level or equivalent experience in the 1410 (Librarian) series.  All
applicants must present a combination of experience, education, skills,
self-development, and expertise, which demonstrates the capacity to perform
the duties of the position.

FUNCTIONS:   Under the general direction of the Supervisory Librarian, the
incumbent provides reference and advisory services to adult customers;
guides library customers in the use of the library's online public access
catalog (OPAC) as well as in a wide range of print and other electronic and
web-based reference resources; advises readers on the relevance, and quality
of particular titles from the circulating collections in meeting customers
informational needs; shares with colleagues of the Division in collection
building activities for a portion of the Dewey 900's as assigned; creates
reference aids (e.g., bibliographies, pathfinders, guides, indexes) to
assist library customers to gain greater access to specific and desired
contents of the library's collections in the fields of history, travel,
geography, biography and genealogy; plans and executes high-interest
programs, such as authors book talks and signings to meet both student and
adult interests.  Works with community groups and/or schools to plan
programs, library oriented discussion groups, etc.  Performs other related
duties as assigned.
