Angie,

I always make the changes you've mentioned after I've imported the
record into my system. I never alter other people's records in OCLC.
But that's just me. I don't know if there is a rule one way or the
other about making such changes in OCLC. I never had to worry about it.

As time passes, there's one more thing you'll want to keep an eye out
for. As more and more catalogers abandon AACR2 and records are created
in RDA, your example will not apply. In RDA you're not supposed to make
one record for multiple formats. So if you have a record for a paper
map, you shouldn't tweak it to also include information and links to the
digital map. You'll need to create a totally separate record, with all
the fields adjusted for the digital map alone. If you're institution is
using RDA. Even if the digital file on your screen is a scan of a paper
map you have in your hand, the 2 formats should be represented by 2
catalog records in RDA. Now if your institution is still using AACR2
and not RDA, then what you want to do is OK. But if you happen to
import an RDA record, and your institution is willing to mix AACR2 and
RDA in their catalog, then your procedures will change depending upon
which cataloging rules apply. Hope this makes sense.

If anyone takes issue with what I've just said, let me know. This
change over, from AACR2 to RDA can be a bit much.

Thanks,
Rick Grapes

Subject: Cataloging question - adding urls to OCLC records

Hi Everyone,

Are there any guidelines or rules about adding the urls to records from
your institutions digital collections to OCLC records done by other
institutions? So, for example, I copy cataloged a map adding my holdings
to a record done by DLC, I put the map in my digital collection and I
put a 530 and 856 in the DLC record.

Good? bad?

Angie
