Subject: GIS Field School Announcement

Field School Announcement:

The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State
University announces the addition of a GIS track to its summer
Archaeological Field School in Kampsville, Illinois.

In addition to the Field Archaeology and Human Osteology tracks, the
2007 program will offer the new option GIS and Environmental Sciences.
The six-week program runs from June 10 to July 20 and confers 6
graduate or undergraduate credit hours. For more details see:
http://www.asu.edu/clas/shesc/projects/cbr/bfs/index.html

About the new GIS and Environmental Sciences track:

This course is designed for students who wish to learn the use of GIS
(Geographic Information Systems) in archaeology or the environmental
sciences. Students learn GIS through real-world applications involving
both field and laboratory work at the Center for American Archeology
(CAA) GIS Laboratory. Daily lectures and practical exercises will
introduce students to GIS concepts, supplemented by readings in
spatial analysis method and theory. Working directly with CAA
archaeologists and GIS professionals, each student will complete a
research project using archaeological and environmental data from the
Lower Illinois River Valley and the Middle-Woodland period Mound House
site.

Emphasis is placed on applying GIS to archaeologically- and
environmentally-related research questions and the study of
human/environment interactions. Topics to be covered include importing
and exporting spatial and tabular data; georeferencing maps and aerial
photographs to real-world coordinates; raster and vector display and
conversions; map and database integration; map algebra; surface
interpolation and DEM-derived layers; predictive modeling and spatial
statistical analysis.
