Adella:

Of course Plate-Caree is a projection. But for purposes of many GIS
applications, material presented this way is available for conversion
to a more graphically sophisticated projection-it is essentially
"raw", with no projection information included in the file in
question. Thus Plate-Caree is a projection in the same sense zero is
a number. Both of Avenza's main products work this way, and ArcView
(at least the older version I use) defaults to this when no
projection is specified. Indeed I just finished a process of
"de-projecting" data from one of our maps - moving it from Minnesota
State Plane (Lambert Conformal) to Plate-Caree - so I could export
point lat-long coordinates to for a database. As a cartographer I
tend to work from a functional standpoint rather than theoretical,
and for me Plate-Caree is functional "ground zero," the graphic
display of information before a real (or integer?) projection is
applied to it.
