This is a survey of map catalogers who use OCLC. How many of you
use a GMD of "map" in subfield h of the 245 field?

I am asking because on page 11 of OCLC's new "Bibliographic
Formats and Standards", Map is not included in the approved list
of GMDs because Library of Congress does not use it. This is
because LC has the maps in a separate database and the GMD would
be redundant. However, I have been using the GMD "map" since I
began cataloging in 1984 because it is helpful to patrons using a
unified cataloged to have another indication that the record is
for a map and not a book.

I am going to try to get OCLC to add the GMD "map" and the survey
results will help me.

Please respond directly to me and I will post the results on
MAPS-L.
