"The Portolan" has been published since 1984 and welcomes you to
investigate this thrice-yearly journal with articles on maps, the history
of cartography, and exploration. It is the only journal of its kind in the
Americas. Below is information on the issue just published. See the end
of this message for the link to the contents list of all back issues and an
index to those issues. The focus of the society and the journal is not
solely Washington; topics are widespread in scope.

"THE PORTOLAN": JOURNAL OF THE WASHINGTON MAP SOCIETY
ISSUE 69 (Fall 2007)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Issue 69 (Fall 2007), consisting of 72 pages, was published in August 2007
and sent to all subscribers and members in good standing of the Washington
Map Society. Copies are available for purchase.

With the overall theme of Mapping Maryland, EDWARD PAPENFUSE describes the
cartographic decisions about the maps of Maryland which appear in the
“Atlas of Historical Maps of Maryland, 1608 – 1908” and RUSSELL MORRISON
describes the holdings in a premier collection of Maryland maps that was
donated to the Maryland State Archives. AVAN JUDD STALLARD discusses the
geographical instruments and navigational decisions made by Abel Tasman in
his 1642 voyage of discovery; this paper received honorable mention in the
2006 competition for the Ristow Prize in Cartographic History and Map
Librarianship. Eric W. Wolf, a recognized authority in cartographic
history and carto-bibliography, is remembered in this issue by ROBERT
HIGHBARGER, who considers his life and by RALPH EHRENBERG who provides a
listing of Eric’s cartographic and exploration writings. KEN NEBENZAHL
updates us on treasures coming to the Festival of Maps, Chicago in November
2007. Three books are reviewed. Our Recent Publications column resumes
under the direction of JOEL KOVARSKY. And there is more. "The Portolan" is
published three times per year; issue 70 is due for release in December 2007.
