You might look into the large-format scanners used for architectural and
engineering drawings and E-size maps.  They come in b&w and also in color,
with a range of resolutions.  They handle up to about 35 by 45, and your
36 by 48's might just make it.  Sept 1994 Imaging Magazine mentions (p.
58) ANA Tech (303-973-6722) and Vidar (1-800-471-7226) as having such
scanners, ranging in price from $15,000 to $65,000.  I'm sure there are
others on the market, too.  Good luck!
