Subject: How to get a stencil stamp
Sender: Christopher Winters <[log in to unmask]>

As is (I'm sure) the practice in many map libraries, Map Collection
staff members here usually stamp call numbers on each sheet of large
cataloged sets.

We use stamps with "settable" type. These work fine, but it takes quite a
while to set the type. (You end up with a lot of respect for old-time
typesetters.)

A few years ago we had a stamp that worked like the dittomasters
many of us remember from high school. You typed the call number
(or a "Gift of" note) onto a stencil, and the ink flowed through.
The result was not beautiful, but the process of creating the stencil
was painless and efficient.

This stencil stamp is lost, and I can't find any listed in the
locally available office-supply catalogs. Does anyone know where
one can buy a replacement? Our student stampers and I would be
enormously grateful for any clues anyone could provide.

Thanks.
