MAGERT Small Map Collections Discussion Group
ALA Annual Conference, Hilton Atlanta, Forsythe Room, Atlanta Georgia
June 15, 2002, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Proposed Discussion Topics

1. How do individuals dealing with maps on a part-time basis handle
reference questions/interactions related to their collections? How many
have training in geography/cartography or other related/relevant areas?
Training issues/needs?

2. What guidance is available (lists or guidelines) for making map
collection decisions?

3. How do other small map collection librarians handle liaison work
with the selectors (usually ref. librarians) for maps and/or government
documents acquisition units (in a depository library).

4. How to make collections more accessible - are others withdrawing
unused collections, making their own user guides, updating a card catalog
collection? Are any libraries being successful with having older maps
cataloged?

5. Can we identify a more appropriate name for this group that more
accurately reflects the part-time/ad-hoc nature much of our work with maps.

6. Do most people organize miscellaneous maps produced by federal
agencies by SUDOC or do they try to devise a geographical scheme the will
helps users who want to browse in a specific geographical area? Example is
the large unfolded sheets and not the USGS maps folded in pockets. Any
ideas/suggestions.

7. Other items?

8. ALA Midwinter meeting will be held January 24-29 in Philadelphia,
PA. What discussion items would you like to see for that meeting?
