Subject: limiting by maps format in a CARL catalog
Sender: Annette Vigil <[log in to unmask]>

I am hoping that some of you map catalogers out there may be able to help
me. We have just switched over to CARL web catalog. Our cataloging staff
set the parameters for creating the indexes which allow limiting by
various things, such as format, language, age level, etc.

They created a limit called "map" which actually results in both map
sheets and atlases.

The MARC tags they used to create this limit are:
007/00 = a and 000/06 OR 006/00 = e or f

I looked at Biblographic Formats & Standards and I note that in subfield
b, there are codes such as d = atlas, g = diagram, and j = map.

I asked our catalogers if we could create the Map limit function by adding
the criteria that 007 subfield b = j, and thus just retrieve maps
(excluding atlases and other things which have cartographic material as
accompanying material.)

I was told that it is not possible.

My query to you, especially if you have CarlWeb, is whether or not it
actually is impossible to build the index the way I've described.

My secondary query is how you would prefer to create a Map limit function.
Would you like to include all kinds of cartographic material, such as
maps, atlases, and miscellaneous books which happen to have a map included
in it, or would you like to have a Map limit function which only returns
map sheets?

Our catalog is available at: http://pac.lib.ci.phoenix.az.us
There are still a lot of bugs in it we are working out.

Thanks for your input.
