Below is information about the NEMO Map Design Competition. The

*North East Map Organization Map Design Competition*

Submission deadline: April 15, 2007

*_An Invitation to Professionals, Amateurs and Students_*

This competition is open to all mapmakers living in one of the following
states for maps completed between June 1, 2006, and April 15, 2007:
Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut,
New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

*_About the Competition _*

The competition has been established both to honor mapmakers in the
Northeast and to promote map making and best practices. Categories have
been established to honor professional and amateur mapmakers and those
in high school, undergraduate and graduate programs. Up to four students
may submit a group project.

Winning maps will be displayed on the NEMO website. As anticipated,
winners will receive awards presented at the NEMO Annual Meeting to be
held in NYC on June 7-8, 2007. Check our website for updates at:

Judging will be based on sound cartographic guidelines. Data
presentation and the relevance of the data to problem solving will be
considered heavily. Judging will focus on the appropriate use of
technology and originality as well. Additional criteria are listed for
some categories.

*Best Overall *

The first place maps from each of the other categories will be placed in
this category and judged against each other for best overall quality.

*Best Data Integration*

Beyond the general criteria, entries will be judged on the variety of
data and the means of data integration.

*Best Design in Small Format Map*

Entries in this category must be a single map product, no larger than 11
in. x 17 in Judging will be based on the general criteria as listed above.

*Best Design in Large Format Map*

Entries in this category must be a single map product, larger than 11
in. x 17 in. Judging will be based on the general criteria as listed above.

*Best Animated Map*

Beyond the general criteria, entries will be judged by the effectiveness
of the map transitions, and the map’s reliability.

*Best Interactive Map*

Beyond the general criteria, entries will be judged on the technology
used, and its reliability. Tools designed for retrieving information,
transforming data, and navigation will be given special consideration.

*Most Unique *

Beyond the general criteria, entries will be judged by the
innovativeness of the subject and design.

*Best** High School** Student Map*

Judging will be based on the general criteria as listed above.

*Best Undergraduate Student Map*

Judging will be based on the general criteria as listed above.

*Best Graduate Student Map*

Judging will be based on the general criteria as listed above.

*Other *

Maps that would not be considered appropriate for another award may be
considered here.

*_Entry Submission_*

For entries in the /best interactive/ and /best animated/ categories,
maps must be made and submitted electronically (via URL) by April 15,
2007, to [log in to unmask] The URL must remain active through June
15, 2007.

For entries in other categories, please submit five print copies and one
PDF copy of each map entry by 2 p.m. on April 15, 2007, to:
