         re: historical town atlasses

One of the projects of the INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION FOR URBAN
HISTORY (title translated from the Dutch) is the production of
historical town atlasses. In countries like Great Britain,
Ireland, Germany, Austria, France, Scandinavian countries
(Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark?) and The Netherlands several
volumes have been published.

In The Netherlands the publications have the following series
sub-title: "Acta collegii historiae urbanae societatis historicum
internationalis"

Under the series title "Historische stedenatlas van Nederland"
the atlases of the following cities have been published by Delft
University Press (Stevinweg 1, NL-2628 CN Delft):
1. Haarlem (1982)
2. Amersfoort (1982)
3. Zutfen (1983)
4. Kampen (1986)
5. Schoonhoven en Nieuwpoort (1990)

Some countries started much earlier. E.g. in Germany the
Landschaftsverband Rheinland in Bonn publishes since 1972 the
"Rheinischer Sta[e]dteatlas". Up till 1989 some 52 parts were
published.

Though these publications may contain old maps most maps are
reconstructions of the town plans, so truly historical maps.
Base maps are all 1:2,500.

For information concerning the map series I think it is best if
you direct your questions to the Mapcurators of the respective
National Libraries (See "World directory of map collections",
IFLA publications 63).
