Bojana,

One of the key characteristics of a map series is that each sheet is at
the same scale -- but not always! I would say you have a map set,
especially because of the different scales, but that's also hard to tell
when you only have a small "piece" of the overall title (and don't know
how many sheets there are in total).

You DO have a collective title, which is a great start. If you decide to
catalog these as a single title map set (as opposed to each sheet
individually, which is also an option), use the collective title as your
245 and list the individual sheet titles, with their numbers if they
have any, at least in a 505 contents note. Since the scales are
different with the different sheets you can either use one 255 with
"Scales differ" or multiple 255s; in the call number use "svar" instead
of a date. Make sure to code the CrTp fixed field as a "b". Dates?
Depends on what you find on the individual sheets and in comparison
against each other. If you're lucky they were published at the same
time. Subject headings should be fun, though the title says its a
topographic map so you may be lucky in getting away with a 651 for
Namibia and a 655 for Topographic maps.

Hope this helps, have fun!

Paige

Hello Fellow Map Catalogers,

I have a number of maps with a collective title: Regional topographic
map of Namibia. They each have their own distinctive title, depending on
the region that is covered. They each have their own scale, and their
date of publication varies. We don’t have the complete set/series, so I
don’t know how many there are total (we have 6 sheets). Do you think I
have a map series or a set here? I am reading through Map Cataloging
Manual and Cartographic Materials and I am still confused as to which
one I have. I know it’s not a multi-sheet single map, but the
understanding stops there J

Does anyone have any recommendations for how to treat this collection?

Thank you in advance for your help,

Bojana
