THE AMERICAN FOLKLIFE CENTER PRESENTS SYMPOSIUM
AS PART OF REDISCOVER NORTHERN IRELAND PROGRAM IN MAY

WHAT: A half-day symposium, "All Through the North, As I Walked Forth .,"
features discussions on Irish place names, folklife and landscape.

WHO: Kay Muhr, Northern Ireland Place Names Project at Queen's Universityin
Belfast, presents a talk on "Richard Bartlett and Place-Names in His Mapsof
Ulster, 1600-1603"; and Henry Glassie, professor at Indiana University in
Bloomington,  lectures on "Ballymenone: The Power of Place and the Riddleof
History."

WHEN: Wednesday, May 16, at 2:30 p.m.

The American Folklife Center is also sponsoring a series of concerts and
lectures as part of the Rediscover Northern Ireland Program. All events are
at noon, with lectures in the Mumford Room and concerts in the Coolidge
Auditorium, ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street,
S.E., Washington, D.C.

. Wednesday, May 2: John Moulden, singer and author, presents a lecture on
Irish traditional song and his work on the Sam Henry Collection, the largest
collection of Irish songs ever published.
. Wednesday, May 9: Singer Rosie Stewart performs a concert of traditional
Irish song.
. Wednesday, May 16: Members of the Francis McPeake family present a concert
with former pupils from their music conservatory in Belfast.
. Wednesday, May 23: Singer and guitarist Dáithí Sproule performs in concert
with highland bagpiper Robert Watt.
. Wednesday, May 29: Flautist Gary Hastings and singer Brian Mullen present
a lecture and music demonstration.

Launched at the Northern Ireland Bureau's St. Patrick's Day event on March
15, the Rediscover Northern Ireland program includes more than 40 area
cultural events highlighting the region's trade and business, arts and

The American Folklife Center's archive, established at the Library of
Congress in 1928, is one of the largest collections of ethnographic
materials from the United States and around the world.  It contains many
collections pertaining to Irish culture generally, and materials from
Northern Ireland in particular.
