The Internet contains several resources for readers.  Below are the
ones I have been able to document.  Please let me know of
additions:
 
ACORN BOOK SERVICES (book search service):
 
Located in Orlando, Florida.  Performs extensive e-mail searches
for out of print books for a $5.00 fee per title, good for one
year.  Will order any book in print and send by mail (prepaid

AMERICAN BOOKSELLERS ASSOCIATION (BookWeb):
 
Has a WWW home page at http://www.ambook.org/bookweb, with
many resources (book news, membership directory, free speech
issues), as well as links to bookstores on the net.
 
 
ANTIQUARIAN BOOKSELLER'S ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (ABAA-booknet):
 
Contains home pages for over 448 ABAA member booksellers, 75 of
whom are online.  Also provides a search service by specialty and
location, catalogs and other services, book fairs, links to online
public access catalogs, and articles from the ABAA newsletter.

AUDIO PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION:
 
A listserve for fans of audio books.  To subscribe to the
Audiobooks list, send e-mail as follows:

If your software automatically places a .sig file in your message,

BIBLIO ELECTRONIC MAILING LIST FOR BOOK COLLECTORS (for collectors
and dealers of fine books - rare, antiquarian, first edition, fine
press, etc., of all kinds):
 
To subscribe to the mailing list, send a message to biblio-
[log in to unmask], with the word "subscribe" in the
subject: line.  Wantlists are welcomed, as well as catalogues from
small dealers.  Biblio also maintains an archive.  Their WWW home

BOOK BYTES OUT-OF-PRINT NETWORK:
 
Book Bytes is a subscription service ($30 signup, $10 per month
minimum) that puts dealer listings together and reports the results
to the "Wanter."  They do not, themselves, buy or sell.  Their e-

BOOKMINE:
 
Conducts free book searches from Sacramento, California,
specializing in western Americana, history of science and medicine,
illustrated books (especially childrens) railroading, travel and
exploration, 19th century literature, and modern firsts.  Their

BOOKNET:
 
Guide to bookstores in the Santa Cruz area.  Has a web page at

BOOKSEARCH SEARCH SERVICE:
 
Lists over 400,000 books online, located in the Mastermind Mall.

BOOK HAVE\WANT DATABASE (Bill Kurtland):
 
Bill is setting up software for bookstores to be able to post lists
of haves and wants, with order processing and shipping

Includes award lists and other pointers to children's book

Wolfgang Hink maintains a monthly list of Internet literary
resources, including newsgroups, FAQs, mailing lists, online books,
electronic journals, zines, online libraries, a reference section,
book shopping, resources for writers, and WAIS and WWW sources.  To

Located in Rillton, Pennsylvania.  Specializes in scientific and
technical out of print books.  Conducts free no-obligation

INFORONICS and TITLENET:
 
Inforonics and Titlenet services offer several searchable catalogs
of several publishers, including McGraw-Hill, Facts on File, MIT
Press, The Reference Press, and many others.  Their gopher address

INTERLOC VIRTUAL BOOK SERVICE (electronic book marketplace):
 
Located in Southworth, Washington, the subscription service matches
books wanted with the stocks of booksellers from the U.S., Canada,
and Europe.  They publish a newsletter and may be reached at either

INTERNET BOOKSTORE (books in e-text):
 
The Internet Bookstore offers new titles in e-text at a reduced
price (a $20.00 book costs $7.00).  If, after purchasing the e-text
version, the reader desires a hard copy, it is only $13.00.  The
bookstore also provides reader software.  They may be reached

INTERNET BOOK INFORMATION CENTER:
 
Fred Zimmerman maintains the Internet Book Information Center
(IBIC) - an experimental project to "provide access to Internet
resources related to books."
 
Available via WWW.  The URL for the WWW server is
http://sunsite.unc.edu/ibic/IBIC-homepage.html.
 
The center's resources include: book-related FAQs, book reviews, an
alt.books.reviews archive, the Commonplace Book, genre book guides,
publisher's catalogs, list of online bookstores, online books,
science fiction and fantasy book area, list of online reference
works.  One can literally spend days in the "center."
 
 
INTERNET MALL:
 
The Internet Mall is a monthly list of commercial services
available on the net.  The first floor of the mall is devoted to
media.  Book-related participants include Book Stacks Unlimited,
Bibliobytes Electronic Books, Moes Books, Powell's Technical Books,
Infinity Link Network Services, Natural Literacy, and many others.
The list of services may be requested by sending a message to

INTERNET PUBLIC LIBRARY:
 
Contains an extensive set of pages for reading, reference, and a

MARKETPLACE.COM (books by e-mail):
 
Gopher to the above address, fill out their order form providing
credit card information, and the book will be mailed to you via
ftp.  There aren't many books available yet, but their list of

MYSTERY COLLECTOR'S BOOKLINE:
 
A newsletter devoted to collectors and fans of mystery and suspense

ONLINE BOOKSTORE:
 
The Online Bookstore, run by Editorial, Inc.  Not only does it
carry books that can be downloaded to reader's hard drives
for $5/book or read onscreen for $5/hour, the store also offers
free downloadable .gif (graphical interface - a compression format
for pictures) files of book covers and other items.  Telnet to

ON-LINE BOOKS NEWSLETTER:
 
A good source for tracking down books in e-text and other online

ORDERPOINT ACQUISITION SERVICE (book search service):
 
OrderPoint's focus is on books for business, but they can get
anything in print and have foreign contacts.  They ship worldwide.

PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY BESTSELLER LISTS:
 
Available from BookWire from their WWW home page at

REC.ARTS.BOOKS:
 
Evelyn Leeper has collected extensive information (in the form of
FAQ's) on bookstores, categorized by city, in the Usenet newsgroup
rec.arts.books, which she posts monthly.  Failing to find what
you're looking for here, take a look at her postings or ask her to
send them to you, as several stores have e-mail addresses.  She's

REC.ARTS.BOOKS.CHILDRENS:
 
Discussion of children's books by librarians, teachers, and
parents, as well as authors and illustrators.
 
 
REC.ARTS.BOOKS.HIST-FICTION:
 
Brand spanking new.  Discussion of books on historical fiction.
 
 
REC.ARTS.BOOKS.MARKETPLACE:
 
A relatively new newsgroup, rec.arts.books.marketplace is THE place
to go for ordering books via e-mail, posting want lists, and
finding on-line booksellers and bookstores in specific subject
areas.
 
 
REC.ARTS.BOOKS.REVIEWS:
 
Also relatively new.  A moderated newsgroup for book reviews only;
r.a.b.r. reviews are archived at gopher.colorado.edu and are
searchable by keyword.  Moderator is Steve Brock

REC.ARTS.MYSTERY:
 
Discussion of mystery and suspense books, movies, television shows,
