I would say there is no such map.

You might look at the various editions of the so-called Thomas Pownall map
of eastern British North America and the United States [1776, 1777, 1783]
and see how the Native American names disappear from the map as the
editions move thru time. Surely the earliest is closest to what the names
were, relative to earliest "contact" with Europeans.

compare names on Pownall to Mitchell, 1755 and Popple, 1733...

But those names were probably only transcribed according to sound, and
non-standardized spelling, not to mention mis-translations of
meaning...from one culture to another.

All the best in your search.

I am hoping the folks at MAPS-L can help me find some information for
one of my professors at the college.

This particular professor is looking for a map that shows both the old
and new names of Indian tribes in the U.S.

Her request below:

"I was wondering if you have a map that has the current [read:
traditional] names of the Native Nations of the United States, possibly
with the names the Colonizers had bestowed...

For example, the Hochunks have returned to using their traditional
name....the Colonizers named them the "Winnebago" but that is not the
name they had for themselves. As tribes are reclaiming their rightful
names, many students are confused in attempting to determine which name
goes with which tribe, and also what is a "language" name [referring to
an entire region who may share language traits] rather than a tribal name.

Does a map like that exist? "

Has anyone seen such a map? So far, I have been unable to find anything
like that.

Any help you could give me would be most appreciated.
