Assistant Professor
Government Documents Librarian
 
The University of New Hampshire Library invites applications for the
position of Governments Documents Librarian.  This person will work as a
member of the Governments Documents Department in providing a full range
of services in a U.S. (75% selection rate) depository, a selective
Canadian depository, and Earth Science Information Center (ESIC), and
the university Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social
Research (ICPSR) service.  This position also provides reference service
for all government information materials in all formats and  provides
leadership in acquiring and accessing information in map and electronic
formats.   This position reports to the Head of the Government Documents
Department.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Provide reference service for government information, maps, and
electronic resources during scheduled hours at the department’s public
service desk.  This includes some evening and weekend hours.
 
Development and management of  Geographic Information Systems (GIS),
print cartographic information services, the map collection, and the
library responsibilities as an Earth Science Information Center (ESIC).
Represent the UNH library in campus, regional, and national cartographic
initiatives.
 
Acquire and manage government electronic information resources, access
to them, and the services of the department’s Data Center.  Work with
the department’s ICPSR representative, develop and promote
Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)
services to the UNH community.
 
Serve as collection development liaison for maps, cartographic
information in all formats and government document electronic resources
including software.  Serve as liaison for other areas of the library’s
general collection.
 
Develop and teach library sessions for patrons and staff for maps,
electronic resources, and other subject areas.  Create user guides and
other instructional materials.  Assist in promoting all government
documents collections and services.
 
Serve on library and campus committees as appropriate.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Required:   ALA-accredited master’s degree.  A minimum of one year
government information experience in a U.S. depository library.
Knowledge of trends in government information, strong public service
orientation, experience with print and electronic government resources,
services, and the internet; excellent communication skills; ability to
work independently and as a member of a group.
 
Preferred:  Experience with GIS software and geospatial map files.
Experience with user education or training.  Preference will be given
those candidates holding a second advanced degree which is required by
the Library for promotion and tenure.
 
This is a twelve-month tenure track position with appointment at the
rank of Assistant Professor.  The successful candidate will be expected
to meet Library and University requirements for appointment, promotion,
and tenure.  The minimum salary is $32,000 commensurate with
experience.  Review of applications will begin

As one of the oldest and largest U.S. depositories in the state, the
Government Documents department has a collection of over 700,000 volumes
in all formats and 55,000 maps.  The University library holds over 1.1
million volumes and substantial serials, microform, audiovisual, and
special collections.  The Library uses INNOPAC integrated library
system, with over 125 public workstations providing access to the OPAC,
the Internet and local CD-ROM resources.  The University library
includes the newly renovated and expanded Dimond  Library, four branch
libraries, a storage facility; and a staff of 78, of whom 19 are
faculty.  UNH faculty are represented by the AAUP.
 
UNH is located near the New Hampshire seacoast, about a 90-minute drive
from Boston to the south and the White Mountains to the north.  It is a
Land Grant, Sea Grant, and Space Grant university.
