Subject: Re: MAPS-L: Question about cataloging geologic maps

I interpret Gwen's question differently than the others who've responded so
far. I don't have a lot of experience cataloging geologic maps, but when I
have cataloged them, there have been times when the same question has
occurred to me. I'd be interested in Chris Thiry's take on it. Isn't Gwen
saying that there are sometimes contours, or isolines, on geologic maps
that are showing something that might not be relief? In other words, are
"structure contours" showing a relief of sorts, or are they showing the
depth of a certain rock structure? And if the latter is the case, then I
would think it would be correct, as Gwen suggests in her second
alternative, to leave the relief code blank, and to put the note she
suggests: Structure shown by contours [or isolines].

Subject: Question about cataloging geologic maps
Date: Thu, 29 Sep 2005
From: Curtis, Gwen <[log in to unmask]>

Could someone with experience cataloging geologic maps please advise me
on something? When a geologic map shows structure by contour lines, is
that considered relief? Should it be coded as "Relf: a" and described
in a note as - Relief shown by contours? Or, do the codes for relief
only pertain to topographic and bathymetric relief? Perhaps the note
should be "Structure shown by contours" and the relief code left blank.
What do you think?
