GizaMap cartographer Mrs. Gizella Bassa attending the ICA (International
Cartographic Association) congress in Ottawa yesterday spent some time
showing us these interesting maps of the region.

Of particular interest for some is the fact that there are 2 versions of
this map with the only difference being in the method used to show
physical relief.

1. The first version shows hypsometric bands of colours to illustrate
elevation changes. A horizontal scale at the bottom of the map indicates
which colours represent various elevation ranges. She calls this the
"British Style" Maplink bought and sells this version with their front
cover.

2. The second version shows shaded relief to indicate elevation and is
therefore somewhat less "busy" but lacks the specific elevation
information. She calls this the "German Style" and it will be sold with
a "Freytag & Brendt" cover soon. It may also be distributed with the
"Nelles" map cover (not sure about that)..

This pair of maps displayed together is a good way to promote a
discussion about the relative merits of each style of relief
illustration.
