*NACIS Presentation Abstract Deadline Extension*
Due to popular request, we have extended the deadline for abstracts for
the NACIS Conference *until June 16th*. So far we have a great variety
of submissions, and anything is still welcome, but we would be
especially interested in more panels and more presentations by and for
professional cartographers. Please send abstracts (about 200 words) to

*2008 NACIS Annual Meeting*
The 2008 NACIS Annual Meeting will be held in Missoula, Montana this
year from *October 8-11*. If you've never been to Montana before you
should plan to attend. The local arrangements committee (consisting of
the mapping staff at Adventure Cycling Association) is planning a fun
event and interesting field trips.
The challenge for most of you will be getting to Montana, especially if
you are not driving. We are 500 miles away from Salt Lake City and
Seattle on interstates - Spokane is the nearest larger city at a
distance of 200 miles.
The airlines that fly into Missoula are Alaska, Northwest, Delta and
United. Make reservations sooner rather than later because flights do
fill quickly. Us Montanans have learned that it is sometimes cheaper to
fly in and out of Spokane, and drive the 3 hours between Missoula and
Spokane. The drive on I-90 is beautiful and traverses two mountain
passes in addition to being a straight shot to Missoula. Rental cars are
available.
Airports nearer than Spokane are located in Helena, Butte, and the
Kalispell/Whitefish area. All are about 120 miles from Missoula, and you
will need to rent a car to reach Missoula.
Another option to come to Montana is to take Amtrak. The Empire Builder
runs across the northern portion of the state with the closest stop in
Whitefish. Access is from Portland, Seattle, Spokane or Chicago. Again,
you would have to rent a car to reach Missoula (135 miles).
Besides attending the meeting you can hike, fly fish in the Clark Fork
River, ride Missoula's hand-carved carousel and bike numerous paths.
Several places in town rent bikes.
Usually early October is a glorious time of the year in western Montana.
Skies are deep blue and the larches on the mountainsides have turned
golden. It is perfect "indian summer" weather. And if it's not the rain
doesn't last long.

*NACIS Grants and Awards--DEADLINE EXTENDED to July 31, 2008*
NACIS has begun three new travel/grant/membership initiatives that
invest in the future growth and strength of the organization. These
initiatives (1) recognize the importance of undergraduate student
membership in NACIS, (2) encourage student attendance and participation
at the annual fall meeting, and (3) support the attendance of general
NACIS members to attend the annual meeting who could not otherwise
attend due to financial limitations. Complete information about the
three initiatives, in addition to application procedures, are posted on

*Map Librarian's Session in Missoula*
Announcing a special 2-hour program for map and GIS librarians and any
other NACIS members interested in learning about who they are and what
they do! For a few years there has been discussion about starting up a
"Practical Map Librarian's Day" (PMLD) or program focused on the
educational/training needs of map and GIS librarians who are NACIS
members, and modeled on the highly-successful "Practical Cartography
Day" sessions. This special session is a first step towards creating an
ongoing half-day PMLD. The first hour will be devoted to an introduction
to the topic and then a presentation and discussion on one or more
aspects of digital cartographic information, such as reference services,
collection development, and/or cataloging of this type of challenging
information. The second hour will be devoted to an all-encompassing
discussion on formalizing a half-day PMLD, including topics/themes, who
will coordinate/run the session, session length, session format(s), etc.
Come and join us for what will be a fun, informative, and lively session
on map librarianship! Make sure to bring your ideas and enthusiasm!

*Calling All Map Librarians:*
We would like to bring to your attention the most recent issue of
Cartographic Perspectives, the journal of the North American
Cartographic Information Society. Bob Kibbee and Angie Cope are the
co-editors of a column in the journal for map librarians: CARTOGRAPHIC
COLLECTIONS. In issue Number 59, Winter 2008, there is an overview of
the column?s history including a bibliography of articles written during
the column's 20 year history.
You are invited to take a look at these articles and consider submitting
your story for future issues. While CP is a labeled a 'journal' and
publishes very high quality articles, the CARTOGRAPHIC COLLECTIONS
column doesn't demand scholarly research or writing. The column is a
forum for communication and sharing among map librarians. Recent issues
have included full color, high quality illustrations making them that
much more appealing. Here is an opportunity to share with your
colleagues through publication. Providing a broad overview, a
description of some unique content or a new approach to a common problem
are among the topics of importance. There is also an ongoing interest in
digitization projects, web design and unique partnerships.

*Publish in Cartographic Perspectives*
You are invited to submit a manuscript to Cartographic Perspectives (CP)
for review and publication consideration. CP is published 3 times a
year, and includes peer-reviewed research on cartography and
geo-visualization (broadly defined), technical/methods notes, articles
on library collections, reviews of books, atlases and software, and
novel maps. CP is fully indexed in EBSCO's Academic Search Complete and
in Elsevier's GEOBASE.
Articles are reviewed within 4 weeks, with reviews typically to authors
within 6 weeks. In the past three years, CP has had an average rejection
rate of 65%. CP also publishes graphics in color, at no cost to authors.

*CSG Masters Thesis Grant*
Masters students enrolled full time are invited to apply for the
Association of American Geographers (AAG) Cartography Specialty Group
(CSG) Masters Thesis Research Grants. These grants are made available
to promote scholarly research in cartography research by students
enrolled in a geography or related degree program. Grants are available
up to a maximum of $500 and may be used for items necessary and relevant
to research such as travel, materials, equipment, and human subject fees.
Deadline for application are *June 15th*, November 1st, and March 15th.
