JOB DESCRIPTION:
 
UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY 84112-9155.  University of Utah.  The Department
of Geography invites applications for a GIS Professional Education
Program Director o develop and direct a professional education
program in geographic information science.  The professional
education program will complement the existing GIS education program
within the Department of Geography through a set of web-based
instruction and short courses oriented to a continuing education
clientele.  The successful candidate will initiate, staff and
maintain these courses as well as manage the professional education
program within a business-oriented environment.  The successful
candidate will work closely with faculty, staff and students within
the Department of Geography as well as the University of Utah's
Division of Continuing Education but will have a substantial degree
of autonomy o develop a thriving professional education program
within an environment striving for world-class GIS education.
Preferred starting time is July 1999 but is negotiable.
 
Qualifications include a Masters' degree in geography, computer
science or related fields with specific education and experience
in geographic information science.  Preferred qualifications include
a Ph.D. in geography, computer science or related fields.  Applicants
should have abilities and interests in GIS education, web-based
educational delivery systems and in management of a professional
education program.  Depending on qualifications, the professional
education program director will be appointed as a non-tenure track
faculty member within the Department of Geography.  Renewal will
be contingent on program success.
 
The Department of Geography administers the Digitally Integrated
Geographic Information Technologies Laboratory (DIGIT Lab).  The
DIGIT Lab provides state-of-the-art facilities for instruction in
GIS, remote sensing, and spatial analysis.  The DIGIT Lab operates
a large inter-operative local area network (LAN) that integrates
UNIX parallel and single RISC processor workstations with Pentium
PC and Macintosh platforms.  The LAN provides both students and
researchers with access to over 150GB of mass data storage as well
as access to he resources of the Internet.  The DIGIT Lab includes
two teaching labs in addition to research and production facilities.
One teaching lab consists of 12 SUN Ultra 1 workstations and the
other has 20 Pentium-based PCs. Both platforms run current versions
of Arc/Info(r) and ArcView(r) GIS software, ERDAS/Imagine(r) and
ENVI(r) image processing software, and SDE(r), Oracle(r), and
Informix(r) DMBS software.  The successful candidate will have
access to DIGIT Lab facilities and technical support from DIGIT
staff.
