The Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, New York City, has opened an art
exhibit, titled "Mapping," October 6-December 20, 1994.

Quoting from the Museum Member Calendar:

While in principle cartography is an exact science, it may also combine a
mixture of poetics and politics. Whether approached as geographic diagrams,
cultural symbols, political emblems, or spatial metaphors, maps are the
meeting place between purposeful representation and pure abstraction. this
exhibition explores the various ways in which a host of contemporary artists
have made maps and map imagery a principal focus of their work.

Mapping includes some thirty paintings, drawings, photo-compositions,
sculptures and installactions...

There is an "accompanying publication." It is called, "Mapping" and is by
Robert Storr. 66pp. 42 illus, 10 in color. The book costs $14.95 [plus tax in
NYState], plus $4.95 p&h. Ask for item #121 at the following MOMA mail order
number: 212-708-9888.

I have not seen the exhibit, I'm just sooo busy....but I will try to get up
there tonight or tomorrow, and will post a "review" for your delectation later
this week or next. I haven't seen the book either... Usually the shop has
"stuff" for sale related to the exhibits, so I expect some unusual cartotrivia
to be available. Will fill you in later! Alice Hudson, NYPL Map Div.
