I've just examined our copy and there is some very slight black discoloration where the box meets the box cover.  Thankfully, the atlas pages are not discolored.

The atlas is in four volumes; each volume housed in black plastic/plastic-like covered boxes and, I assume, that the discoloration is the breakdown of the plastic like substance covering the boxes.
