There were several counts done off the photo snapped by the GeoEye satellite when it came overhead at 11:19 am. One was done by a Jane's satellite imagery analyst:

Another off the same photo by an Arizona State journalism professor:

The photo shows crowds still pouring in, but a much more sparsely covered Mall than the Capitol-based TV pool cameras showed.
