Angie (and rest of the list):

This same argument - perhaps inevitably - has cropped up on other lists
to which I subscribe: what's wrong, or embarrassing, with telling the
whole list the result(s) of your duplicate maps disposals or location of
elusive cartographic materials? It can be helpful, in the former case,
that the whole list then knows who has acquired which duplicate material
and any subsequent practical discussion (who's paying, or collecting,
for its transport) certainly is a one-to-one 'off-list' matter. In some
other questions a reply to the whole list could jog an earlier would-be
responder's memory (or for him/her finding the time) to respond with
positive, or supplementary, information: again: who knows to whom else
this could be useful? Remember: there's always the delete key . . .

Subject: MAPS-L: Requesting sheets/maps/info off list vs. on list

Greetings all,

A subscriber recently brought to my attention that many requests at
Maps-L ask for responses directly to them, off-list. The problem with
the request to reply off-list is that nobody else on the list knows if
the request has been filled.

I ask kindly that if you submit a request to Maps-L and want people to
respond off-list - that you be conscientious and let the list know as
soon as possible when the request has been filled. If no one replies
off or on -list within a few days, feel free to resubmit your request.

I don't think there is anything wrong with asking people to respond
off-list. There are many lurkers who might be unwilling to reply to the
entire list as a whole, but who are willing to reply to an individual
off-list. The idea is to get the assistance you need and make sure that
maps-l subscribers aren't duplicating one another's' efforts.

Thoughts??

Thanks for your attention everyone!

Angie
