           WESTERN ASSOCIATION OF MAP LIBRARIES
             Spring Meeting April 18-20, 1996
                   Eureka, California

                 CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Conference Location

The conference is being held at two sites in Eureka. On
Wednesday, April 18, it is being held at the Humboldt County
Library at 1313 Third Street (approximately Third and N Streets).
This beautiful new library overlooks Humboldt Bay and sits at the
edge of "Old Town" Eureka behind the Carson Mansion, Eureka's
most famous landmark. Parking is free at the library but for
those driving, try to park in the outer areas so library patrons
have primary access to the library. Parking permits will be
available for the conference session at Humboldt State
University. On Thursday, April 19, the conference is being held
in the Humboldt Bay Room at the Red Lion Inn at 1929 Fourth
Street.

Conference Host

Conference host is Robert Sathrum. Bob can be contacted by phone
at work (707-826-4930) or home (707-442-9028) or fax (707-826-
3440) or email ([log in to unmask]). Please feel free to
call, fax, or email him if you have any questions relating to the
conference. A web page is available at
http://library.humboldt.edu/~rls for additional information on
the conference and the local area.

Registration

Conference registration is $25. Deadline for registration is
April 8. Please complete the registration form, making checks
payable to WAML, and sending to the address shown on the
registration form.

Transportation

For those flying, the Arcata/Eureka area is served by two
commuter airlines - United Express (800-241-6522) which flies
>from San Francisco and Sacramento, and Horizon Airlines (800-547-
9308) which flies from Portland. The Arcata Airport is
approximately 10 miles north of Eureka. For those staying at the
Red Lion Inn a complimentary airport shuttle is available. Call
the hotel at 707-445-0844 for arrangements. For those staying at
other locations, a Door-to-Door Airporter shuttle services the
airport. Fare is $13 one way for a single person. Multiperson
rates are cheaper. Reservations are available at 707-442-9266.
Car rentals are also available at the airport and in Eureka.

For those flying through San Francisco, you may want to consider
renting a car at that point. The 5-hour minimum drive is a
beautiful trip through the wine country and the redwoods. For
those desiring a ride from the San Francisco area, send Bob an
email message and he will post it on the web page noted above.

The Eureka area is also served by Amtrack. You can take the
train as far as the San Francisco Bay area with the rest of the
trip on an Amtrack bus.

For other local travel questions feel free to contact me or
Dalianes Travel at 800-675-7679. Dalianes Travel is located on
the HSU campus and knows the details of getting in and out of
Humboldt County.

Housing

The conference hotel is the Red Lion Inn at 1929 Fourth Street in
Eureka. It is located five blocks from the Humboldt County
Library. A rate of $60 for single or double occupancy (two queen
beds) has been arranged for the conference. Call the Inn
directly at 707-445-0844 and mention that you are attending the
WAML conference. In addition to the conference hotel, Eureka has
a multitude of motels and bed and breakfast inns. Enclosed in
the conference packet is a list of these.

Wednesday Reception

For early arrivals Bob Sathrum will host a reception at his home,
3403 F Street in Eureka from 6pm to 8pm. Although F Street does
connect all the way through from downtown, it is best to take
either E or H Street until you get to the 3500 block and then
find F Street.

Thursday WAML Dinner

The WAML Dinner will be held on April 18 at the Beach House at
Merryman's Restaurant which is approximately 15 miles north of
Eureka. Directions will be available at the conference. Dress
is informal as you may wish to walk the beach. Four menu choices
are available:

             Vegetarian Pasta ($13.50)
             Seafood Pasta ($16.00)

vegetable, bread, and dessert. A no-host bar will also be
available. Directions will be distributed at the conference.

Friday Humboldt Bay Cruise

On April 19 enjoy the sights and smells of Humboldt Bay on board
the Madaket, the oldest passenger ferry in continuous service in
the United States. This hour-long cruise along the bayfront
includes an on board reception hosted by MapLink. Boarding
begins at 5:45 pm at the foot of C Street in Eureka. The cruise
is limited to the first 48 people and guests who register.

Saturday Field Trip

On April 20 there will be a day-long fieldtrip to Redwood
National Park and Prairie Creek State Park, approximately 45
miles north of Eureka. Meet in front of the Red Lion Inn at 8
am. We will carpool to the Redwood National Park Visitor Center,
and then to the Tall Trees Grove where the world's tallest tree
is located. The hike to Tall Trees Grove is one-half mile each
way with a drop of 500 feet. Lunch will be at Rolf's Park Cafe
near Prairie Creek State Park. The cafe features continental
food and behind it one often finds a herd of Roosevelt Elk. We
will spend some time at Prairie Creek State Park and arrive back
in Eureka at approximately 5 pm. Our tour host and guide will be
Jerry Rohde, author of Redwood National and State Parks: Tales,
Trails, and Auto Tours.

Weather

Spring in Eureka can be nice but you should come prepared for
cooler maritime temperatures. The average high in April is 56o
