The main brands I know of are:
Hewlett-Packard (HP) models: 750, 755CM, 2500,3500
Calcomp Techjet series
Tektronix 600
Novacad (models ?)

You can get most of the info you need off the web by searching their name
(Tektronix = www.tek.com)

If you check your yellow pages, you should be able to find who in town
deals with these name brands (and I'm sure you have more choice in TO
than we have in PG !

They each have their advantages, though HP has by far the largest share of
the market (but that criterion alone is only decisive if you also voted
liberal / drink lite beer / admire the music of the Spice Girls!)

I don't know about the price (administrators upstairs take care of that) or
combarbility with other brands, but here in my branch we use a couple of "Hewlet
Packard Design Jet 750 C Plus" plotters. They are often going all day and do a
good job. Rarely break down, too. They take 36" wide paper, have 75+ mb RAM (I
think) and can plot at 300 or 600 dpi (we use 300, so I can't speak to the
quality/speed of 600 dpi on this machine). I can't recommend going out to buy
one (not having done the shopping myself) but I can definately recommend using
one.
