Jorge,

In my opinion this is not truly a change to practice under AACR2.
Perhaps it was stated incorrectly (should have been stated as "double
dashes" or "two dashes" or similar for clarity); I cannot imagine that
the folks who did the editing work on this standard meant to over-ride a
successful display practice of the past couple of decades. That said, it
WOULD be good to know for sure whether the use of a "hypen" was
explicitly meant as a change or not. (or even some other similar
punctuation mark as found in word processing software such as an en dash
or em dash, only difference being the length of the "bar" involved)

That said, instruction 7.4.2.3 does say "hyphen" and the accompanying
example does show the use of hypens. So, maybe they DID mean what they
said. I checked, and there is not any kind of LC Policy Statement for
guidance on this either. So, I am going to bring this up to Min at LC
G&M to see if they have discussed this new punctuation style or not and
what route our colleagues at the Library of Congress are, or are
planning on, taking.

Paige

I have always separated latitudes and longitudes with two dashes --
in the 255

(E 22°--E 107°/N 75°--N 32°)

RDA on 7.4.2.3 Recording Longitude and Latitude

Separate the west and east coordinates with a *_hyphen_*and the north
and south coordinates with a hyphen. Do not use a space before or after
the hyphen. Separate the set of longitude coordinates from the set of
latitude coordinates by using a diagonal slash, with no space before or
after the slash.

Did this change?
