I was wondering, perhaps naively, as our collection is not richly endowed with rare and ancient maps, what are some of the methods that can be used to prevent map theft? Have they remained primitive, or is the high-tech world coming to the rescue? I'm only aware of the primitive:

Is it unacceptable to use TattleTape (TM!) on the reverse of venerable items, or in some innocuous place? I realize there are many ways to get around the security patch route, but something is better than nothing.

In my experience with examining rare maps and prints in France, the common technique there is to boldly and intrusively brand the item with the owner/collection's stamp. The stamp's location is made on neutral ground if at all possible, but it is somewhere noticeable and impossible to remove without telltale signs. The condition of the item is certainly compromised, but the ownership is not to be questioned. Is this worthwhile?

Just some musings. This issue is a big one, obviously.

Brian

Hi,

I know nothing about Gilbert Bland other than a few emails here.

Has someone called this person to verify the identity? Has someone
notified Ebay? If this guy is a serious problem, call the cops.
Don't wait for someone else to do it. Otherwise, all of this chatter
is gossip and fearmongering.
