Jim Coombs:

How general/specific - both geographically and by species - does your
requester need the maps?

At hand as I write (in RGS-IBG's Foyle Reading Room, London [UK]) is the
first edition of the 4-volume 'International bibliography of vegetation
maps', edited by A.W. Kuechler (Lawrence KS : University of Kansas
Libraries, 1965-70). Vol. 4 ('Vegetation maps of Africa, South America
and The World (General)' has entries, under 'World', from 1866 to 1968.

Omitted (but it could well be noted in the 2nd ed. of Kuechler - now
online?) is the 2-volume folio 'Weltforstatlas = World forestry atlas',
by F. Heske, C. Wiebecke, & R. Torunsky [et al.] (Hamburg : Institut
fuer Forstpolitik und Weltforstwirtschaft, 1951-75). [see RGS-IBG's
OPAC, shelf-mark: 14.B.182]

Sincerely,
(Mr) Francis Herbert (former Curator of Maps, Royal Geographical Society
with IBG)

I just had a request for world or regional maps that show the various
types of trees. The closest we could find were natural vegetation maps
in atlases. Do any of you know if such maps or GIS data exists?

Thanks,
