Hello,

The USGS has a page on working with topographic maps at
http://education.usgs.gov/lessons/mapresources.html which includes
several educational resources (at the bottom of the page). "What do maps
show?" is linked to this page and is designed for middle school. This
was also available as a free educational packet many years ago, and
included a poster and several lesson plans. It may be available in a
depository library.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey has a publication titled "Reading
topographic maps—activities for earth science teachers and students"
which can be downloaded for free from:
http://www.ogs.ou.edu/pubsscanned/EP7.pdf

The Illinois State Geological Survey has a publication titled "How to
read Illinois topographic maps" that is also available for free download
at: http://library.isgs.uiuc.edu/Pubs/pdfs/ges/ges20.pdf

Finally, the Maine Geological Survey has a resource titled "Reading Maps
with a Critical Eye: Becoming an Informed Map Reader" on their maps web
site (http://www.maine.gov/doc/nrimc/mgs/mapuse/index.htm), which is
particularly geared towards geologic maps.

Hope this helps. Linda Zellmer

Subject: map reading books for 6th-9th graders?

Hi all;

I have a local (NC) middle school teacher looking for books that can
be used to teach 6th-9th graders how to read maps. I'm no familiar
with books for that age group. Could someone recommend 2 or 3 titles?

Thanks
Russell Guy
