Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi


The Mary and Jeff Bell Library at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
invites applications and nominations for the Director of the Library.
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is committed to becoming one of the
leading centers of higher education in the Gulf of Mexico region while
serving the intellectual, cultural, social, environmental, and economic
needs of South Texas.  The university continues to expand in terms of
student enrollment and program offerings.  In 2002, student enrollment
grew to approximately 7,600 students.  Program offerings in the four
academic colleges now include 61 degree programs, including 34
undergraduate programs, 24 masters programs, one MFA, and two doctoral
programs.

The Library is the University's major resource for research and study,
housing a collection of approximately 1.1 million books, bound
periodicals, microforms, government publications, and non-print
materials. The Library includes a strong media collection; a unique
Special Collections and Archives emphasizing the culture and history of
South Texas; and a branch library at Driscoll Children's Hospital, a
pediatric teaching institution located near the university.

The Library Director reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic
Affairs and is responsible for supporting and leading a full-time staff
of 32.  The successful candidate will provide strong vision and
leadership for the library which will include administrative oversight
of staffing, technology services, and collection management of print and
digital resources to support University research needs and academic
program certifications.  The Director is responsible for representing
the Library in the University community and community-at-large;
maintaining and administering the library's budget; assessing and
evaluating the library's services; advancement of a rich technological
environment; and planning building improvements to address both current
and future needs.  The Director will respect a diversity of ideas,
opinions and perspectives, maintain strong and constructive
relationships with the library staff and university constituencies, and
demonstrate a supportive but decisive management style.

Qualifications:  ALA-accredited MLS or other masters in librarianship
required; a second master's or advanced degree is desirable; at least 5
years in positions of increasing responsibility as a professional
librarian in a graduate degree granting institution; exceptional
interpersonal skills; a record of professional growth and development;
and knowledge of technology information management and academic library
principles, practices, and procedures. Ability to work with a university
committee representing faculty needs and recommendations is preferred.
Candidates with experience in managing budgets at the assistant or
associate director level or higher are preferred.  A person of vision
who can lead and work as a member of a team will be highly valued.
