Subject: USGS map series name

Can someone tell me (and hopefully it will be relevant to others) if
there is a difference between the USGS "Miscellaneous Investigation
Series" and the "Geologic Investigation Series?"

These two series appear to share the same SuDoc classification number and
numbering system, as well as the same item number.

I checked the USGS web site and it listed the "Miscellaneous" series on
its definition page of maps, but said nothing about the series title
"Geologic."

The List of Classes uses the title "Geologic Investigations." Old
check-in records in my library show that the original series title was
"Miscellaneous."

Trying to make it all clear as mud to users who get into the OPAC! Thanks,
