TITLE:  DIGITAL CARTOGRAPHER

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:  NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING & ZONING/PLANNING & ZONING

GRADE:  16
HIRING RANGE: $32, 985.68 to $39,599.56
Employee must be a resident of Boston at the time of hire.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:   Under direction of the Manager of Digital
Cartography produce maps for various Agency uses; supply Agency staff and
members of the general public with geographic information.

Receive requests from Planners and other Agency staff for maps and
geographic information including demographic, assessing, and zoning
information.

Utilizing desktop publishing software and Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) produce maps for presentation via print, the Agency's intranet, and
the internet. Develop creative options to lay out and present information in
effective manner.

Improve distribution of geospatial data to general public. Adapt and clean
data for distribution. Make data available through web site and/or Agency's
map counter.

Assist GIS Specialist in digitizing and updating agency's geospatial
information including zoning maps, maps of proposed development and
neighborhood initiatives, etc.

Assist researchers by making exploratory maps using Census, Assessing, Land
Use, and Zoning information.

Organize, update and maintain various databases both relational and
geographical.

Develop and recommend expansion of mapping and graphics services provided.

Perform other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Work requires completion of a Bachelors degree or equivalent in Geography or
related field. Must be experienced in all aspects of cartography including
the use of color, typography and visual hierarchies in map design;
projections and coordinate systems; design requirements for different media;
and so on. Proficiency in desktop publishing (Freehand or Illustrator,
Photoshop) and web design programs and basics of GIS required; familiarity
with electronic data formats including GIS data formats essential. Must have
at least one year of experience in an office environment.
