Hi Katie and all;

At the University at Buffalo, we have begun a repository in the
Libraries for faculty, but it is so far, for documents and publications,
etc. HOWEVER, for a number of years I and a colleague have been pushing
for a GIS/cartographic repository/clearinghouse setup and this year,
I've gotten some interest by administration on it. a number of faculty
have been wanting to take part, while some are either hesitant or
outright reject the idea ("it's my research and I won't share it").

I have been asked to put together a committee to gather the various
parties together on campus and develop a plan for a type of repository.
The concept that gained interest was a simple digitizing of print maps
thing, however, I replied with my concept of a university
GIS/Cartographic data collection/repository and it was considered worth
the effort. We'll see how this translates into reality...

As for geoportals; we have a server to hold GIS data sets and have ESRI
and other data collections that we purchased/subscribe to on it. Items
are in our catalog with access instructions for our patrons. Beyond
this, I've developed access links through web guides to data from
government and other sources. Given that GIS is going mainstream, we are
starting to see an increase in interest and use. I am hoping that
getting a GIS collection center going now will make it easier for
faculty to accept a repository and contribute to it as part of their
routine. Some are looking for us to lead on this now; others still will
keep to themselves. I think that in time, this will become more accepted
and even expected by faculty as the norm.

I think some of the change will come as people better understand and
appreciate the entire GIS universe and their part in it.

Hi all,

I'm doing some preparation for a NACIS presentation the week after next
and hoping to gather knowledge from the collective Maps-L mind!

I'm investigating geospatial research data in open repositories. And...
I'm not finding much at all. I had hoped that the recent increase in
research data management and data repositories would be reflected in the
geospatial world. That in itself is an interesting finding, but I can't
talk about it for very long! So, I have two questions for Maps-L folks:

1.Does your institution have an IR that is planning to already holds
research**GIS datasets?

2.Does your institution host a geoportal that contains institutional
research data as well as commercial or government data?

I'm doing more research on geoportals, government, and subject
repositories, but thought I'd ask in case I'm missing something. It can
be hard to pull out geospatial data. Thanks for any info you can provide!

-Katie
