Hi:

I don't know if anyone has any experience accessing Indian Population
data, but we've received the following question from a student. Below
is his request:

I am requesting help in researching statistical data for a Geographic
Information Systems project. The project is on urban slum development in
India, and I am looking for statistical data, preferably in a tabular
format, to use in creating the features of an illustrative map. The
ideal data set would be total population and population living in slums
for as many large Indian cities as possible for as many time intervals
as possible. I have found a website which claims to host such data
prepared by the National Slum Development Programme of the Indian
Federal Government, but the website wants a membership fee of $1000.00
to access the data. The website is indiastat.com and the page with the
link to the data is:
http://www.indiastat.com/urbanareas/31/slums/257/stats.aspx
and the dataset I am interested in is "City wise Total Population and
Slum Population in Million Plus Cities in India" towards the bottom of
the page.

I checked and the institutional membership for IndiaStat.com is $3,000.
I've tried to contact them using their webform, but keep on getting
error messages. Does anyone have access to this set of Indian
statistics? Will this provide him what he's looking for? Does anyone
have any ideas on other sources he could use?

Thanks

Chris Kollen
