Subject: [GEONET] maps

Hi,

Maps for smartphones (Android and iPhones) are now available more easily from the USGS:

USGS Topo Data on the Go:

http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=3580&from=rss_home

A trick to find quick page size (8.5 x 11) maps is to use what other Federal agencies have already created; most countries have administrative, physiography, and transportation maps from the source online at : https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/cia-maps-publications/index.html
Examples from earthquake and general travel inquiries:
Chile: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/cia-maps-publications/Chile.html
Italy: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/cia-maps-publications/Italy.html
China: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/cia-maps-publications/China.html
Turkey: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/cia-maps-publications/Turkey.html

I also often use the CIA's World Factbook - please note that it is updated weekly: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html
Examples:
Chile: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ci.html
Italy: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/it.html
China: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ch.html
Turkey: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/tu.html

World Factbook FAQs: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/docs/faqs.html

And sometimes, library users are just looking for a regional or world map: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/docs/refmaps.html

The USGS assesses statistics for oil and gas volume estimates, 95th-percentile, median, 5th-percentile, mean, for example, this 2012 fact sheet: http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2012/3052/fs2012-3052.pdf ; however, the CIA World Factbook has estimated production, consumption, imports, exports, etc.. for each country, which students are usually looking for as a starting point when looking for topics related to writing a paper...

I hope this helps with maps and other worldwide inquiries.

Enjoy the day,
Emily
