Hi,
At MIT, we've been loaning GPS units for about 6 years or so. We have
about 15 units, most of which are _Garmin GPSMAP62s_
<http://sites.garmin.com/gpsmap62/info/>. Some of the units have _City
Navigator_
<https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1456&pvID=73853&ra=true>
installed. Units can be requested and checked out at the circulation
desk of the Architecture and Planning Library (the library that houses
GIS services).
The default is that they circulate for a week, but people can request to
have them longer by emailing the GIS team. I'd say most of the people
who borrow them take them out for longer, usually a few weeks, for trips
to collect data in the field. We have a form that they sign during
checkout to let them know that they are financially liable if the unit
is lost or damaged. We've had maybe 2-3 go missing, and as far as I
know, the person who checked it out has always paid to replace it.
We used to check them out with a case (like a camera case), but the
units are pretty small and I think the case became more of a hassle, so
we haven't been checking those out as much anymore. It also comes with a
cord to download the data, and a manual for getting started.

We have an equipment loan program at the University of Maryland, and are
considering expanding it. Does anybody have a similar program and loan
out GPS units, and if so can you share the specs of what you use or do
you have suggestions on the most appropriate sort of units for this
purpose? I’d be happy to compile responses and send out a summary if
people are interested.

Thanks,

Lara
