You are just reverting to the written itinerary, a much older method for
providing travel directions. This has an interesting history itself. See
Catherine Delano-Smith's Chapter 2,  "Milieus of Mobility: Itineraries,
Route Maps, and Road Maps" in Akerman's (ed.) _Cartographies of Travel
