------------------
There's one proposal of particular interest to the cartographic
community at the annual meeting in Orlando. Proposal 2004-07 grew out of
the discussion paper 2004-DP02 MARBI discussed in San Diego. This
concerns applying field 752 (added entry - hierarchical place name) in
different ways. Defined purposes for field 752 are for indicating areas
served by newspapers and showing where something was published for rare
books cataloging. The Library of Congress American Memory project is
using the 752 field to provide browsable geographic subject access to
the maps that have been scanned as part of the project. Some users feel
the need to distinguish between the uses made of field 752.

The proposal discusses two possible solutions. One would be to define an
indicator to convey if the field is showing coverage or place of
publication. The second option would be to redefine field 652 or define
field 662. 652 was previously defined as Subject Added Entry-Reversed
Geographic. Field 662 has never been used.

This proposal is slated for discussion on Saturday morning.
