------------------
The following announcement that was recently posted on OCLC-Cat by one
of my
colleagues at OCLC will be of interest to those of you who catalog on
OCLC.
It concerns a recent install of OCLC's implementation of the MARC 21
formats. Of special interest to map catalogers concerns changes to
field
034. In addition to the link to Technical Bulletin 249 noted below,
changes
have already been made in Bibliographic Formats and Standards. Check
field
034 at http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/0xx/034.shtm.

===========================
Changes to OCLC's implementation of the MARC 21 formats were implemented
on
May 18, 2003. Besides several miscellaneous changes, the major changes
improve the compatibility between UKMARC and MARC 21, addition of
subfield
$u for URL's to several specific notes fields, revision to coding
practices
in field 655 (Genre/Form headings), and the implementation of several
new
MARC 21 Language Codes. See Technical Bulletin 249, OCLC-MARC Format
Update
2003 for further information.
