Salaries for faculty generally correspond to "reputation"(here to be taken in
it's broadest sense). However, salaries for librarians vary tremendously, and
correspond poorly, if at all, with any measure of so called reputation of the
institution. Private institutions are notoriously noted for offering very low
salaries for librarians. They are counting on the prestige factor to bring in
the applicants, and, in some cases, I suspect, they simply don't care, as
they'll mitigate it by proclaiming how money they have put into library
resources (other than librarians), laboratories and faculty.
