Exploring a totally unexplored area -- the use of GIS (Geographical
Information Systems) in library services, the present study ends up
with the development of many new ideas and concepts, while making
some original contributions. Based upon a through survey of the
relevant literature from both the fields and combining theoretical
discussion with experimental back up, the author attempts at
developing a prototype of GIS based library system, applies it to
real situations, and then discusses the results which demonstrate the
specific use of GIS in 3 select areas: mapping the library
collections; providing information services based on spatially
related databases; and networking of library resources. Certainly,
the study opens the ways towards further research and development in this area.
