*CATALOG LIBRARIAN
ORIGINAL AND SPECIAL MATERIALS CATALOGING DEPARTMENT*

The Columbia University Libraries seek a cataloger with strong
cataloging and classification skills to provide original cataloging
primarily for rare and archival titles in the Burke Theological Library
and the Rare Book and Manuscript Library. *This is a two year
appointment with the possibility of extension.*

Reporting to the Head of Original and Special Materials Cataloging, the
incumbent will provide full (or other appropriate level) original
cataloging for titles in a variety of languages and formats. The
position will also plan and coordinate projects as assigned and perform
complex catalog maintenance. The Libraries participate in BIBCO,
CONSER, NACO and SACO. Catalogers contribute to planning, policy and
procedure development and are expected to keep abreast of methods,
guidelines and approaches for the bibliographic control of library
materials. Columbia's extensive digital library activities provide many
opportunities for catalogers to work in non-traditional ways with
colleagues in special collections.

Requirements are: accredited MLS or equivalent, working knowledge of
cataloging principles and procedures including AACR2R, RDA, LC subject
headings and classification and MARC 21 formats; experience cataloging
rare books and/or other special collections material using Descriptive
Cataloging of Rare Books; strong working knowledge of Latin and one or
more western European languages (German preferred).

Additional requirements include effective verbal and written
communication skills, excellent organizational skills,
aptitude for complex, analytical, and detailed work and demonstrated
awareness of new and emerging standards
and technologies relevant to bibliographic control and metadata, and a
commitment to their effective application.
Highly desirable qualifications include understanding of the role of
digital technology in special collections, experience
with Voyager and OCLC; experience in a large research library; ability
to train and revise colleagues in NACO and
other applications of controlled vocabularies.

We offer a salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Minimum salary range begins at $53,000.

One of the world's leading research universities, Columbia provides
outstanding opportunities to work and grow in a unique intellectual
community. Set in the Morningside Heights academic village, Columbia
also presents the unmatched dynamism, diversity and cultural richness of
New York City. The University Libraries, grounded in collections of
remarkable depth and breadth, are also building extensive electronic
resources and services. The Libraries at Columbia are committed to
