Here's an upcoming 2-day preconference at
the American Library Association Annual
Conference this summer:

WHEN and WHERE:
The 2003 ALCTS (Association for Library Collections & Technical
Services) Preconference on Knowledge Without Boundaries: Libraries in
Collaboration, will be held from Thursday to Friday, June 19-20, 2003
in Toronto. Please visit the ALCTS Web Site at:
http://www.ala.org/alcts/education/preconference.htm

SUMMARY:
Libraries have expanded their role as knowledge managers beyond the
boundaries of the library. They have entered into collaborative
projects with other information-bearing institutions to create new
forms of access to a variety of materials. Librarians need to be aware
of metadata standards that are being integrated into library portals,
which will precipitate cataloging rule revisions. This program will
present collaborative projects and programs that impact library methods
of providing access to information and will also present changes and
trends in cataloging.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Participants will become more informed about the choices of metadata
standards and their integration with traditional library cataloging.
2. Participants will have a better understanding of the current changes
and trends in cataloging.
3. Participants will become more knowledgeable about specialized
projects being conducted at home and internationally in the Web
environment.
