The University of Texas at Arlington Libraries invites dynamic and
innovative librarians to apply
for our Geographic Information Systems Librarian position.  This position
provides expertise and
leadership in developing, promoting and expanding GIS services to the UTA
community.  Responsibilities
include ensuring access to GIS resources for remote and onsite users,
providing GIS instruction to
faculty and students, collaborating with faculty and library staff to
assimilate GIS based instruction into
applicable coursework and promoting the use of library and university GIS
facilities and courses.
The GIS Librarian gives special attention to the assessment of student and
faculty needs, training,
consultation and the hardware/software requirements for geospatial analysis
and mapping.

As a member of the Information Literacy Program, the Geographic Information
Systems Librarian
is one of four full-time professionals and one library assistant within a
creative program that
enables and promotes effective information seeking and critical thinking
skills.  This position
offers the opportunity of developing original ideas and pursuing new
initiatives that will shape
the future of instructional services at UTA.

Working hours may include nights and weekends, depending on the community's
instruction needs.

Required Qualifications.  ALA-accredited Masters degree by date hired;
Academic or work-related
experience with GIS software, data and statistical analysis; Knowledge of
geospatial and numeric
data resources and the application of GIS in a variety of disciplines; High
degree of computer
literacy and knowledge of relevant computer technologies, including ArcGIS
and database systems
and management; Ability to work with many formats of data and to manipulate
it into standard
formats used by GIS and other mapping software; Effective combination of
interpersonal and
technical skills including strong analytical and quantitative skills and
spatial literacy;
Experience with group and individual instruction and with the design and
development of training
tools, learning aids, assignments and web pages; Demonstrated leadership and
the ability to
identify priorities, learn quickly and manage time effectively as well as
excellent oral,
written and graphic communication skills; Conversant in GIS applications and
trends.

Preferred Qualifications.  Teaching experience in an academic library or
related environment;
Engaging and dynamic classroom presence; Understanding of geospatial
metadata standards and
practices; Experience in government information resources and collection
development experience
in a science or social science discipline; Previous experience with outreach
and marketing
services to faculty; Knowledge of current learning, teaching and information
literacy theories,
standards and practices; Experience with needs assessment and program
development and the ability
to provide leadership in project management; Interest in emerging computer
technologies and their
applications in academic libraries; Ability to develop multimedia
presentations while addressing
various learning and teaching styles; Desire and enthusiasm to learn and
work independently and
through teams in a challenging and rapidly changing environment.

Salary.  Minimum $40,000, with professional rank and salary determined by
credentials and experience.
