POSITION:  Special Formats Cataloger.  University of Georgia Libraries.

The Special Formats Cataloger is responsible to the Head of the Nonbook Cataloging
 Section for performing original and copy cataloging of cartographic, media, and
electronic resources in all subjects and a wide range of languages.  The Special
Formats Cataloger serves as a resource person for cartographic, media, and
electronic resources cataloging within the Department and in other areas of the
Libraries.  The Nonbook Cataloging Section of the Cataloging Department is comprised
of the Head, two librarians, and two full-time support staff members.

The University of Georgia Libraries supports GIL (Galileo Interconnected Libraries),
a statewide, automated, integrated system and is a member of CONSER and NACO.  The
Cataloging Department has 10 librarians and 21 support staff positions and catalogs
over 45,000 titles each year in all formats.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides bibliographic access to media, cartographic, and electronic resources by
performing original and copy cataloging of these resources on the OCLC database,
using AACR2, Library of Congress classification and subject headings.  Local
cataloging policies and priorities are also observed.

Contributes to the quality and completeness of the local and national databases by
revising and updating existing cartographic, media, and electronic bibliographic
records when necessary.

Promotes the use of consistent headings in local and national files and contributes
to the efficiency of the national cataloging effort by establishing name, name-uniform
title, and subject authority records.

Maintains the quality of local and national cataloging by staying current with
national and international trends in bibliographic control, especially as they
relate to cartographic, media, and electronic resources.

Serves as a resource by advising libraries staff and staff from other libraries
about map and media cataloging policies and procedures.

Functions professionally within and contributes to the successful operation of the
 Cataloging Department and the Libraries administration by
participating in the Department's policy-making process.

Enhances the regional and national status of the Libraries and the University and
increases the quality of individual contributions to the Cataloging Department by
participating in continuing education and professional development activities.

Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the department and organization
and contributes to the team effort by assuming other similar duties and
responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ALA-accredited MLS; Knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress classification and subject
headings, USMARC format, and contemporary cataloging rules; Familiarity with automated
cataloging systems, preferably OCLC; Ability to work with broad range of subjects;
Competency in one or more modern European languages; Ability to function as a
contributing team member in a production-oriented environment; Flexibility in adapting
to changing departmental and organizational priorities; Effective oral and written
communications skills; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

BENEFITS:  Standard benefits package includes life, health and disability insurance
and mandatory participation in the state or optional retirement system, and 21 days
annual leave, plus 12 paid holidays.  Salary minimum:  $29,000.  For further
