The Yale Map Collection

The Yale Map Collection, located in Sterling Memorial Library, includes
an outstanding collection, housing more than 200,000 sheet maps and
2,000 atlases, as well as a developing Geographical Information Service
[GIS] to acquire, create and support visual representation of over 300
GB of digital cartographic data. The purpose of the Map Collection is to
serve as a focal point for the collection, organization, and
dissemination of cartographic information, regardless of format, as well
as for the provision of reader services associated with these resources.
The use of collections of print maps and atlases is augmented by the
application of geospatial information systems and imaging software.
While its coverage is international, the Collection has extraordinary
strengths in maps of North America. The Collection's interests are
historical and contemporary, print and non-print, with a program of
growth through purchases, gifts, and depository arrangements.

The Position

The Library seeks a Curator whose experience and professional
contributions to the field beyond the local level demonstrate readiness
to shape the Yale Map Collection and guide the Yale Library in the
implementation of new systems for supporting research and teaching using
geographic information.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Associate University Librarian with
responsibility for research and educational services, the Curator serves
as the Library's principal authority on the subject of maps in all media
and formats. The Curator directs the day-to-day activities of the Yale
Map Collection. In addition to selecting material for the Collection,
managing its budget, and leading its staff, the Curator works closely
with colleagues throughout the Library to oversee cataloging and
preservation of maps in the Collection, to offer reference and
instructional services for the Collection, and to provide tours,
exhibitions, and publications based on the Collection. In addition, the
Curator works with others in the Library and University to plan and
implement appropriate levels of security for the collections while at
the same time providing appropriate access for readers. The Curator will
be expected to serve as a resource for colleagues throughout the Library
who have responsibility for cartographic materials. Working closely with
other Yale librarians and with Yale faculty and students, the Curator
will take a lead role in coordinating the Library's overall collection
building and service programs related to maps and cartography, as well
as the Library’s efforts to apply new technologies to the description,
storage, access, preservation, and manipulation of cartographic
materials and geographic information. The Curator will also be
responsible for contributing to the development and pursuit of overall
Yale Library goals, objectives, and policies, as well as for
contributing to map librarianship at the local and national levels.

Qualifications

Masters degree from an ALA-accredited program in library and information
science or equivalent experience required; completed graduate degree
required, preferably in discipline related to the position. Minimum of
five years of increasingly responsible professional experience in an
academic or comparable research institution related to maps, and
demonstrated professional achievements and services. Demonstrated
successful managerial and leadership experience including demonstrated
ability to plan and implement projects and services, lead library staff,
and work effectively with other members of a research-oriented
community. Knowledge of emerging information technologies, especially
those supporting geographic information systems, is expected. Experience
in providing classroom instruction at the college level and knowledge of
trends related to rare maps, special collections management and
services, and GIS are strongly preferred. Appointment at the Librarian
IV or V level requires 8 or 12 years of professional experience,
respectively, and professional accomplishment. Strong analytical skills;
excellent oral and written communication skills, and a demonstrated
commitment to providing excellent customer services are essential.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful
candidate's qualifications and experience (min: $57,800). Full benefits
